Watercraft Rental Information

Explore, experience and enjoy the Onalaska area by water! Rent your single kayak and launch your watercraft at the Great River Landing. Head north for a view of the Lake Onalaska spillway that feeds into the Black River, or head south to explore further along the Black River before it feeds into the mighty Mississippi. Nearby attractions within paddling distance include: Airport Beach, Pettibone Beach, Copeland Park, scenic views of area bluffs, Riverside Park & more. Included in your rental is one kayak, paddle and life jacket.

Reservations and Rental Fees

Kayaks are available to reserve using the Rent.fun app on a first come, first serve basis. Your rental time begins at the time you complete your payment and click "reserve". Kayaks can be rented in 2 hour increments for $20.

Memberships are also available for $50/season. With a membership, you can enjoy unlimited 2-hour rentals, all season long!


How to Rent 

Renting kayaks has now been made easier than ever! Follow the steps below to rent your kayak from the Great River Landing waterfront and explore the Onalaska area by water!
Step 1: Download the Rent.Fun app on the App Store or Google Play Store
Step 2: Select the nearby Great River Landing location or use the "scan" option to scan the QR code on your kayak's locker. 
Step 3: Add your payment method.
Step 4: Accept the agreement and terms of service. 
Step 5: Retrieve your kayak, lifejacket and paddle from the locker and enjoy 2 hours of paddling for $20! 
General Policies:  
  • 4 single kayaks are available to rent from the Great River Landing Waterfront using the new Rent.fun system, installed in spring of 2023.
  • Watercrafts may be reserved beginning Memorial Day weekend and extending through Labor Day weekend each year (weather permitting).
  • Do not leave valuables in lockers. Do not leave your phone in lockers as this is how you will unlock the locker to return your kayak.
  • Watercrafts must be launched at the Great River Landing waterfront. They may NOT be relocated.
  • Maximum of 1 person per watercraft.  
  • Renter must be 18 years or older. Children 17 & under must be accompanied by an adult while using kayak.
  • Alcohol is strictly prohibited. 
  • You must wear a lifejacket at all times.
  • Payment in full for all rentals is due at the time of reservation. 
  • Late fees may be incurred if rental is not returned by reserved time limit. 


Watercraft Usage Rules

  • All participants must know how to swim and be in good physical condition.
  • All participants must wear an Onalaska Parks & Rec provided life jacket at all times. (Life jackets can be found inside the kayak house and retrieved at the time of your rental).
  • Kayaks are to be used at the Great River Landing water entrance only.  Kayaks are not to be hauled or portaged to any other location.
  • To avoid stronger currents and motorized watercrafts, it is recommended you keep towards the river’s edge.
  • Stay away from barges and other large watercraft, even if they are not in motion.
  • Each single kayak is to be used by only one person.
  • Do not exceed the maximum weight limit of kayak.
  • Do not block waterways with kayaks.
  • Do not use oars to push off objects such as docks, other boats, or embankments.
  • Consumption of alcoholic beverages/drug use is prohibited while using kayaks.
  • No littering.
  • No glass allowed in or near kayaks/canoe, kayak house, or watercraft launch.
  • Watercrafts, paddles and life jackets must be returned to the kayak lockers in the same condition in which you receive them.
  • If keys are not returned within the allotted time frame of your rental, you may be charged accordingly.
